Significance of quote for us A. If the future were to be similar to that in Fahrenheit 451, life would be very dull and monotonous B. This situation would cause a lack of communication in our society C. People would have no hobbies Frank Bottone February 1998 Mr. Reidy Final Draft Fahrenheit 451 Quote: "School is shortened, discipline relaxed, philosophies, histories, languages dropped, English and spelling gradually neglected, finally almost completely ignored. Life is immediate, the job counts, pleasure lies all about after work. Why learn anything save pressing buttons, pulling switches, and fitting nuts and bolts?" The book Fahrenheit 451 is a futuristic story, in which society believes that books are useless and a waste of space. These people feel that the most important aspect of their life is their job and entertainment such as television after work. In this essay, I will answer the question in the quote above. This quote from Fahrenheit 451 explains society's opinion of books. It is their belief that people waste valuable time reading books and stories. Society feels that everyone should concentrate on learning a trade and working. They feel that books can't and don't give you any useful information. The supporting argument is that you should be practicing you trade so that you can get more work done to get more money not wasting time reading a book. This society also feels that books are corruptive and give you false ideas as to how the world should operate. I believe that the society in Fahrenheit 451 is afraid that someone will gain knowledge from books and try to revolt because according to a book, something in the community is wrong. Society feels that their life is easy just as it is, with everyone working. They also feel they are content and nothing should be changed that might upset them. Guy Montag is a fireman whose job it is to burn books when he meets a humanist, Clarisse. After talking with Clarisse a few times, Guy Montag becomes curious about books and life. Clarisse is always curious about why things happen or why people act the way they do, and this changes Guy's opinion of life and also about books little by little. He begins to sneak books home from houses before they are burned, trying to satisfy this new 'hunger' for knowledge. In the event that our future were to be similar to that in Fahrenheit 451, life would be full of boredom and would be very monotonous. All people would have to do is think about their job while they are doing it, and then when they go home they wouldn't have as many things to do not being able to read a book. For example, parents wouldn't have storybooks to read to their children, and people wouldn't have books to read at night to help them to fall asleep or to help them understand something complex. Another part of people's lives are hobbies they might have, such as coin collecting, stamp collecting, woodworking, or bird watching. Most of the information about a particular hobby can be found in a book. If we were not able use books as a source of information, we wouldn't have very much information about our hobbies. We probably wouldn't have any hobbies or interests at all. This type of situation could cause a major lack of communication in our society since people wouldn't be able to express themselves as clearly or with the knowledge that they would have acquired through reading books. People also wouldn't have anything to talk about. We learn about current events happening in our own communities as well as the world. We learn from the good and the bad that happens around us, which keeps us a civilized people. In conclusion, it seems that a society without books lacks significant ideals. Our lives cannot resolve around work alone. In contrast, people who read and share what they read will have a higher level of intelligence and variety in their life.
